Attaining the "Christ Mind" through seeing with "Christ's Vision."

If you are approaching the end of your formal mind training program — completing your study of the three volumes of A Course in Miracles — it is appropriate to review some important points, goals, and techniques. These are meant to be practical, not theoretical. They are the bedrock of the river of our journey. This is not an exhaustive list, but it contains all that is needed to reach our goal. Many of you have contributed to this compiled list of practical applications. It is not meant to be read in one setting or memorized. Please think of this as a reference, reminder, and resource.

Search out your unloving thoughts in whatever form they appear: uneasiness, depression, anger, fear, worry, attack, insecurity, and so on. Whatever form they take, they are unloving and therefore fearful. And so it is from them that you need to be saved. CE W-39.6:2-4

The Role of God's Teachers

God can be reached directly, for there is no distance between Him and His Son. His awareness is in everyone's memory, and His Word is written on everyone's heart. Yet this awareness and this memory can arise across the threshold of the unconscious only where all barriers to truth — all unloving and attack thoughts — have been removed. In how many is this the case?

Here is the role of God's teachers. They too have not attained the necessary understanding as yet, but they have joined with others. This is what sets them apart from the world, and it is this that enables others to leave the world with them. Alone they are nothing, but in their joining is the power of God.

³God's teachers have the goal of awakening the minds of those asleep and seeing there the vision of Christ's face, to take the place of what they dream. CE M-28.6:2-3

The Way Out of Fear

ACIM Lesson 23 teaches: I can escape from the world I see by giving up attack thoughts. The idea for today contains the only way out of fear that will ever succeed. Nothing else will work; everything else is meaningless. But this way cannot fail.

Every thought you have makes up some segment of the world you see. It is with your thoughts, then, that we must work if your perception of the world is to be changed. If the cause of the world you see is attack thoughts, you must learn that it is these thoughts that you do not want. There is no point in lamenting the world. There is no point in trying to change the world. It is incapable of change because it is merely an effect. But there is indeed a point in changing your thoughts about the world. Here you are changing the cause. The effect will change automatically.

This world is only in the mind of its maker, along with his real salvation. Do not believe it is outside of yourself, for only by recognizing where it is will you gain control over it. For you do have control over your mind, for the mind is the mechanism of decision. CE T-12.VI.6

The Mind's Three Levels

Robert Perry, editor of the Complete Edition of ACIM, notes that Jesus teaches the mind has three levels: the Superconscious (heavenly) level above, the Conscious level in the middle, and the Subconscious level below — which is itself divided into a superficial layer filled with the impulses of this world and a deeper layer filled with the impulse to miracles.

In ACIM, the unconscious mind is the seat of the ego thought system — rooted in separation, fear, and guilt. It contains what the Course calls "the tiny mad idea" of separation from God, and is the source of all attack thoughts, judgments, and grievances. It cannot be directly accessed or changed through conventional means.

The subconscious mind is more like a buffer between the unconscious and the conscious mind. It contains thoughts and beliefs not currently in our awareness but more easily accessed — manifesting as habitual reactions, automatic behaviors, and recurring patterns.

The Role of Forgiveness

ACIM teaches that true forgiveness is the key to accessing and healing both the unconscious and subconscious mind. As we practice forgiveness, we bring unconscious material to the subconscious, and then to conscious awareness where it can be healed. The Holy Spirit can access our unconscious mind and help us reinterpret its contents — shifting our perception from fear to love.

How to Become Aware of Subconscious Attack Thoughts

Becoming aware of subconscious attack thoughts is an important step in clearing them. Some strategies that help:

Mindfulness Meditation — Regular practice helps you observe thought patterns without judgment, surfacing subtle attack thoughts.  •  Emotion Tracking — When negative emotions arise, trace them back to their source: attack thoughts are often at the root.  •  Trigger Identification — Notice what situations or people consistently trigger defensiveness.  •  Projection Awareness — When criticizing others, pause and consider whether you are projecting your own fears.  •  ACIM Workbook Lessons — Many lessons are designed to bring subconscious thoughts to the surface. Consistent practice increases awareness.

Practical Exercises from ACIM

Lesson 23 — Giving Up Attack Thoughts

Practice identifying attack thoughts throughout the day and consciously deciding to let them go. Repeat the idea several times an hour and apply it to any specific attack thought you notice.

Lesson 21 — I Am Determined to See Things Differently

Choose a specific person or situation you have judged negatively and affirm your willingness to see it differently.

The Holy Instant

Step back from a situation, quiet your mind, and ask the Holy Spirit for a new perspective. Particularly useful when caught in attack thoughts.

Lesson 68 — Love Holds No Grievances

Practice this five-minute morning and evening meditation: close your eyes and think of someone you hold a grievance against. See them as clearly as possible. Try to perceive a light surrounding their body. Expand this light until it covers both of you. Hold this vision as long as you can without strain, quietly repeating:

Love holds no grievances. I would wake to my Self by laying all my grievances aside and wakening in Him. CE W-68

Christ's Vision — The Final Goal

Who uses but Christ's vision finds a peace so deep and quiet, undisturbable and wholly changeless, that the world contains no counterpart. And all the world departs in silence as this peace envelops it and gently carries it to truth, no more to be the home of fear. For love has come, and healed the world by giving it Christ's peace. CE W-305.1

The goal of working with these levels of mind in ACIM is to eventually transcend the ego thought system entirely, awakening to our true nature as one with God and all creation. This process is a gradual undoing of the ego's thought system rather than a building up of new beliefs — a journey of remembering our true nature, not learning something new.
